## What's Inside the Mujarrabat al-Ruhban

- Qur'anic verses and oaths sworn by the Torah, the Gospel, and the Psalms combined in a single grimoire — with a blessing that names the Prophet Muhammad alongside the Lady Maryam and the Master ‘Isa.
- Love spells, binding rites, and protection formulas collected “from the books of the monks and the sages.”
- Ink recipes and fumigation instructions for ritual work, specifying materials and preparation methods in practical detail.
- 308 pages of hybrid religious magic.

## Mujarrabat al-Ruhban: The English Translation

*Mujarrabat* means “tested formulas,” and *ruhban* is the word for monks in Arabic — Christian monks specifically — so the title promises recipes proven in practice. The compiler says he gathered them “from the books of the monks and the sages,” and one chapter, the Candle of Lebanon, is credited to the monks of Mount Lebanon as one of their closely guarded secrets.

Readers looking for a Mujarrabat English translation should know that more than one Arabic manual of proven remedies carries that word in its title; this volume translates the monks’ collection, an anonymous Christian-Arab compilation of c. 13th–15th century, with its invocations given in English, in transliteration, and in Arabic script. The history behind it is told in our essay on [the Christian monks who practiced Arabic magic](https://johnfriendpublishing.com/articles/christian-monks-arabic-magic-mujarrabat-ruhban.html).

### Surah Fatiha, Surah Yaseen, and the Throne Verse

For a book of the monks, the Mujarrabat is steeped in Qur’anic recitation. Surah Fatiha frames its work: operations call for the Fatiha once, seven times, or before a recitation repeated 444 times, and the compiler instructs that all work be sealed with the Fatiha and the last three chapters of the Qur’an.

A chapter called *al-Fatiha al-Ruhaniyya*, “the Spiritual Opening” — here *fatiha* carries its plain sense of “opening” — sets out a full session in which divine names are recited over a vessel of clear water. The book quotes a verse of Surah Yaseen (Ya Sin 36:72) in a working of love and subjugation, gives a recitation of Surat al-Ikhlas, and reads the Throne Verse over each corner of a house to protect it from the jinn and the evil eye.

For Arabic prayers against the evil eye in another tradition, see [al-Buni’s prayers for plague, childbirth, and the evil eye](https://johnfriendpublishing.com/articles/al-buni-prayers-plague-childbirth-evil-eye.html). Beside the Qur’anic material stand a blessing on the Lady Maryam and the Master ‘Isa, and oaths sworn “by the truth of the Torah and the Gospel” and by the Psalms and the Furqan.

### Islamic Talismans, Amulets, and Love Rites

A large share of the book concerns love and attraction: chapters on attracting love (*jalb al-mahabba*), on making someone love you, on reconciling a wife and her husband, on attracting women and men, and several marked “swift of answer.” Like other Islamic talismans, its amulets (*hirz*) are built from divine names, Qur’anic verses, abjad numbers, and magic squares (*wafq*) — written in saffron ink and rose water, often on a Friday in the hour of Venus, and fumigated with aloeswood or frankincense.

Protective chapters guard children, marriages, and homes. ## Questions About the Mujarrabat al-Ruhban

### Is there a Mujarrabat English translation?

Yes. *The Tested Remedies of the Monks* is the first English translation of the *Mujarrabat al-Ruhban*, 308 pages, published by John Friend Publishing and sold on Amazon in Kindle, paperback, and hardcover editions. The Kindle edition is free to read with Kindle Unlimited.

### What does Mujarrabat al-Ruhban mean?

*Mujarrabat* means tested formulas, and *ruhban* is the word for monks in Arabic, referring specifically to Christian monks. The title therefore means “The Tested Remedies of the Monks.” The compiler says he collected the material from the books of the monks and the sages.

### Does the book use Surah Fatiha or Surah Yaseen?

Yes. The Fatiha is recited within many operations — sometimes once, sometimes seven times — and the book instructs that all work be sealed with the Fatiha and the last three chapters of the Qur’an. It also quotes a verse of Surah Yaseen (36:72) in a working of love and subjugation, and uses the Throne Verse to protect a house from the jinn and the evil eye.

### Does it contain Arabic love spells?

Yes — love and attraction make up a large share of the book, from the opening chapter on attracting love to chapters on reconciliation between spouses, a marriage amulet, and attraction rites marked “swift of answer.” Our essay on [the six types of love spells in the Mujarrabat](https://johnfriendpublishing.com/articles/mujarrabat-tested-love-spells-medieval-arabic.html) sorts them by kind.

### Is the Mujarrabat a Christian or an Islamic book?

It draws on both. It is an anonymous Christian-Arab compilation, yet one of its blessings names the Prophet Muhammad alongside the Lady Maryam and the Master ‘Isa, and its oaths invoke the Torah, the Gospel, the Psalms, and the Furqan together with Qur’anic verses and the divine names.
